Spice Up Your Life

4 Feb

Vanessa, Una, Mollie, Frankie and Rochelle

For most people, girl groups died in 1998 when Geri Halliwell left The Spice Girls.

I am not most people.

(Please don’t tell me that for most people girl groups never really started. This post is only for people with hearts.)

As I was saying…since 1998 my love of girl groups has remained strong, albeit a bit directionless.  I stopped over at Atomic Kitten.  I air punched to Cheryl Cole’s “Fight for This Love.”  I even attended The Spice Girls reunion tour with the hair of Mel B. But mainly I sat, wishing, hoping, thinking and praying.

Then about three years ago I started reading British gossip magazines in earnest to prepare for my move to London.  This noble endeavor led me to…The Saturdays.

Oh joyous day.

Since I started listening to The Saturdays a lot of things have changed.  Frankie got her iconic haircut. Mollie was rumored to have dated Prince Harry.  (Don’t worry, he’s still available, ladies.) And now The Saturdays have their own reality show!  I’ve been tuning in every week and if you love British accents, girl groups, and tears then you are going to love this.

For those of you who are new to The Saturdays I suggest you start here:

PS: Yes, I have assigned myself a Saturday, thank you for asking.  I’m a Frankie.  Or at least I want to be a Frankie and that’s enough for now.  The hair!

PPS: In case you haven’t air punched recently:

PPPS: Vampire Weekend covered “Fight for This Love” and you HAVE to listen to it.  Find it here.

PPPPS: How many postscripts can you have for one post before it becomes annoying? Right.

I love the Saturdays! IMHO, they should be just as famous as the Spice Girls. If I were a Saturday, I’d love to be Irish Una but frankly I’m probably more of a Mollie personality-wise. 😛

Obsessed with them. I would have to say I’m a Mollie if only for the fact that she’s blonde and single? And I wish I looked like her. You go Frankie!
